Geologist Job at Barrick Tanzania

This role is responsible for supporting geological activities within mining operations through geological interpretation, grade control, data management, and production support. The Geologist ensures accurate collection, analysis, and reporting of geological information to optimize ore extraction, control dilution, improve gold recovery, and support safe and efficient mining operations.

The position works closely with mine planning, technical services, survey, geotechnical, metallurgy, and operations teams to provide critical geological inputs for decision-making. It also involves supervising geological technicians, maintaining geological databases, ensuring quality control of sampling programs, and contributing to the achievement of production and business objectives while upholding the highest safety and environmental standards.

Responsibilities

• Follow all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures
• Provide safety leadership to employees, contractors, and business partners
• Ensure compliance with company standards, regulations, and best practices
• Conduct 3D geological interpretation including sections, maps, solid models, and block models
• Share geological outputs with mine planning, resource, and operational teams
• Create ore polygons following model updates and communicate updates effectively
• Ensure drill pads are prepared and drilling teams are informed before drilling activities commence
• Conduct flitch analysis, ore assessments, and risk evaluations before drilling
• Ensure all potential mineralized zones are tested through grade control drilling and sampling
• Collect and integrate lithological, structural, and geotechnical data into geological models
• Monitor and control ore dilution using OREPro and related technologies
• Utilize Ore Movement Technology (BMT/OREPro) to improve ore tracking and control
• Implement and monitor sample quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures
• Coordinate sample dispatch and laboratory submissions in accordance with standards
• Monitor stockpiles, production grades, and mining activities to support daily operations
• Perform ore reconciliation analyses and investigate dilution factors
• Participate in mine planning and operational management activities
• Collaborate with technical services, survey, metallurgy, and mining teams
• Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual geological reports
• Provide geological recommendations to improve grade control and gold recovery
• Supervise drilling contractors and monitor drilling performance and budgets
• Mentor and train Geological Technicians, Assistants, and junior staff
• Support professional development and skills enhancement programs
• Maintain geological records, reports, and documentation accurately and on time
• Provide regular updates on geological risks, dilution, and production performance

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology or a related field
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in mine geology and/or exploration geology
• Experience using Vulcan, Leapfrog, Micromine, or other geological software packages
• Knowledge of geological modelling, grade control, and ore reconciliation processes
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Understanding of geological databases and data management practices
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive manual transmission vehicles
• Knowledge of occupational health, safety, and environmental management practices
